Grief, strong emotion, and trauma live in the body. And your body has something to say about it. Discover how you can more powerfully process these emotions by listening to your body’s messages.

In our last blog we discussed how critical it is for people to fully feel their emotions in the present moment. As a grief therapist, you give clients a safe place to connect with their deep emotion. Then, they’re enabled to begin the healing process.

As you continue with your clients, do you also notice that they frequently complain of pain?
Perhaps a stabbing pain in the shoulder, a knot in the neck, or constant stomach issues?

It’s not surprising, because grief, strong emotion, and trauma live in the body. Discomfort is the body’s way of sending a message.

In fact, research continues revealing the connection between emotional pain and body pain. I’ve heard many stories of grief-stricken parents being diagnosed with a serious illness following a child’s death.


Grief and trauma are debilitating. Without releasing these emotions, where do they go? They don’t. They stay (stuck in the body) wreaking havoc.

There is good news though.

The body not only holds the grief, it knows the way out–how to release it. We can learn how to tune into our body. Discover a way to more powerfully process emotion in the present moment.

Unfortunately, we often don’t realize that pain is the body’s way of asking for attention. We grimace and bear it. Until it becomes chronic and disabling.

That’s why I teach my clients the 3-Rs which stands for: Recognize, Relate, Release.

Recognize: Notice the pain, tightness, discomfort. Stay in the present, tuned into the body.

Relate: Approach the trouble spot with curiosity. Your body has a message. It will tell you what its saying by using metaphor. It might feel awkward at first, but ask your body, “What message do you have for me?”

Release: With gratitude, thank your inner wellbeing for illuminating what needs to go. Then, verbally release that emotion, grief, or trauma.

By practicing the 3-Rs, practitioners and their clients can access the brilliance of the body-mind guidance. You can move into a new state of being. A state of personal balance, self-compassion, and self-care.
